The Song: “Love is a Battlefield” by Pat Benatar, because it's full of the emotional challenges that all women face.
The Name: Onna-Bugeisha were female warriors, Samurai belonging to the Japanese nobility. Reflected in the Japanese flag, the country is known as The Land of the Rising Sun. Red was loved by the Samurai, an auspicious colour. It was worn for strength and power.
The Design: The re-tasked bright red belt with gold circle detail at the back of this jacket was chosen to reflect the strong red sun symbolism. The stark contrast of feminine gold sequins to the opposing bronze studded faux leather was designed to tell a further story…one about a woman who needs to be a blend of both gentle and powerful. A second belt was used in this upcycled design, its individual bronze panels being perfect to suggest pieces of armor to the shoulders, matching beautifully with the front left panel embellishment, a re-tasked jewellery piece suggesting a medal. Overall, the concept of this jacket was designed to portray the demands of who a woman needs to be both in our times and in history past, a combination of soft and strong.
